Law students not only need supplements for their classes, they need supplements for their health.
Law school is taxing both on your mind and body. A law student can easily put in a 12 hour day of non-stop studying. When I was working on my law review article last semester, I often worked from 7 AM to 10 PM to get it done. If you’re not taking care of your body, all this work and stress can land you in the hospital. (Note: That’s what happened to me last year.) A law student cannot afford to miss a week of classes and studying!
In addition to exercising regularly and eating well, law students should consider taking a few nutritional supplements to help them make it through the law school experience. Vitamin/herbal supplements used in conjunction with exercise and diet can not only keep you from getting sick, they also might help you perform better come exam time.
Here’s a run down of supplements that I’m currently taking to keep me healthy and to boost my brain power:
- Vibrant C. Vibrant C is a drink mix full of vitamin C and other vitamins and minerals. I start drinking this during cold season in order to boost my immune system. I don’t have time to be sick in law school, so any way I can prevent coming down with something is welcomed.
- Daily Vitamin Supplement. While eating a well balanced diet to get all the vitamins and nutrients you need is ideal, sometimes law students don’t have time to eat healthy. That’s where a daily vitamin supplement can come in. You’ll get all your daily recommended vitamins in one little pill.
- Ginkgo Biloba. Studies have shown that regular consumption of Ginkgo helps improve thinking, learning, and memory. In law school, that’s all you do. Taking Ginkgo won’t turn you into a super genius, but every little thing helps. Studies also show that ginkgo helps ward off depression. This is particularly useful in law school where depression is unfortunately quite common.
- Fish Oil. Fish oil is full of omega 3 fatty acids. Research has shown omega 3 fatty acids have several health benefits. The benefits that law students should be interested in include better brain function and less depression. Omega 3 improves memory, recall, reasoning, and focus; all important skills on law exams. There is some evidence it boosts the immune system as well.
- Yerba mate. Yerba mate is a tea made from a shrub in South America. The benefits of yerba mate are similar to those of green tea. I’ve been able to kick my soda habit by switching to yerba mate. I get the benefits of the energy boost from the natural caffeine, along with health benefits from all the antioxidants. Plus it energizes you without the jittery feeling coffee or energy drinks can give.
- 5 Hour Energy. If this stuff was cheaper, I would take it everyday. It is an energy drink that actually lives up to its claim. It makes you feel energized, focused, and ready to take on the world. All without the jitters or the crash when it wears off. I take one of these shots before all my final exams and they power me through those stressful 3-4 hour periods.

I can attest to the benefits of yerba mate, I am from Argentina and was a law student there.
These guys sell bulk yerba mate at good prices:

I bought about 40 to 50 lbs of yerba mate from them at about $ 90.
I basically just use protein powder and a multi-vitamin. Most nutritionists seem to think that actual food based nutrients are delivered better than those in vitamins or supplements but I don’t think my diet is balanced enough to kick the multi vitamin. I don’t take fish oil because I usually eat tuna and/or salmon at least once a week.
Oh, Brett- one request for the blog. If reading through a feed reader the author doesn’t appear. When I click on the article to come to the blog itself it still doesn’t appear either- you only see it if you are actually at the FLS home page. Could that be changed so that we could see which person authored a post from the feed reader and so it shows up on the post itself as well? That way we know who we are addressing in comments.

Another option for omega-3, by the way, is flax seed oil (for the veggies among us :). It’s a little tricky, though–you have to get it somewhere that sells it refrigerated, and keep it in the back of the fridge (even the door is too temperature-volatile) so that it doesn’t lose potency. Some places (like Trader Joe’s) will sell flax seed oil unrefrigerated, but it’s not as strong/effective.
Because it tastes like nutty oil (i.e., not pleasant by itself), I usually down a Tbsp and then some OJ. Other options, though, are to make it into a salad dressing (there are recipes online which I haven’t tried); I hear that tastes better. My boyfriend also grinds up the seeds and sprinkles it on cereal.
Eat!
Eat food, eat lots of good, healthy food!!!!!
There are studies that show going to graduate school (and especially law school–argh!) is one of the most stressful pursuits you can engage–right up there with being a journalist (yes–the most stressful job, believe it or not), a doctor, or a single parent.
One thing I learned in school was that I could neglect eating or neglect sleeping, but if I neglected them both I would invariably get sick. Often getting regular sleep and enough of it is just not an option. So your only choice is to get food.
Your body is designed to benefit from food, not from weird supplements. A balanced diet (meat, veggies, fruit, and grains — hold the sugar, hold the processed junk) will give you all the nutrition you need, and make you feel happy to boot.
Another way to try flax oil is mixed with yogurt. I like plain Kefir best. You can even stir in a some ground flax seed, too. Add a little sweetener, if necessary, and voila , a homemade protein drink–Kefir’s a pretty good protein source.
Those supplements are good for most of us! But we have to eat well, too. It’s a must! By the way, I enjoy your blog and am still reading through older entries. I read one about you starting the envelope system and am curious how that worked for you and if you still use it. My husband and I do and it’s incredibly good for our budget!
Great reminders! I’m post-law school now, but I’m studying to take the bar exam - possibly the only thing more stressful than law school? I’m trying to overload on vitamins to stay healthy, especially with the flu so widespread these days.
I’m taking Andrew Lessman vitamins, including his ginko/memory and Omega-3 supplements. I favor EmergenC for the vitamin drink - but I also drink Target’s generic of Airborne. I sprinkle ground flax seeds in my Greek yoghurt.
I will have to look for that 5 hour energy stuff - I cannot believe I haven’t already tried it!
A word of caution - my son (19 years old) was recently hospitalized after having a severe reaction to Airborne. Not to say everyone would have a similar reaction, but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone based on my son’s experience.
I also would like to add vitamin b complex. Its very helpful especially when you feel that when you cant remember what you memorized for the oral exam.
You may want to consider taking Greens+. I’ve been taking Greens+ Extra Energy daily for a few months and have found it beneficial. Works out to be about $2 a day, but in my case I believe that the benefits have outweighed the costs.
Excellent blog by the way! Just stumbled on it through lawiscool.com. I’m a 0L with $15k in debt so this is of particular interest to me. Fortunately I’m a Canuck so my tuition will be in the range of $7-12k annually, but it still seems like a large obstacle to navigate.

The cheapest and most effective vitamin supplement is Vitamin D - take the capsules in oil as they are absorbed much more effectively. The 1000 mg D-3 gels cost pennies and are not only beneficial but necessary to full gene expression.
Health is the matter of prime importance and so if you want to keep fit, you will have to add good quality nutritional supplement to your diet.
Great ideas for the health supplements, especially the Fish Oil idea, that works really well.
This is also a good idea for Brides!
this is a very informative post. A schedule like that is no doubt deteriorating to the body … it is good to add a nutritional supplement like that.
with such a hectic lifestyle .. stress and health problems are inevitable .. these supplements are a great way to boost your health !
Don’t forget your antioxidants. Gotta kill off those free radicals!
You sound like your much more health conscious than I was when I was in school. Your ahead of the game now if you are conscious of the supplements you are consuming. Just be sure the source of your supplements is trusted. And always consult with your health care provider before undergoing a health care regime change to include adding health supplements.
