Coupons for dining out
Written by Brett McKay
I’m sure you all have received a Valpak mailing in your mailbox. I used to throw these things away thinking it was just junk. The reality is that envelope is full of great deals at local restaurants.
They have a website where you can print off those same coupons they send in the mail on your computer. Just enter in your zip code and Valpak.com will come up with a list of coupon offers for local business. Mrs. FLS and I found deals for restaurants we really like and we plan on using this site often.
Free Food at School
Written by Brett McKay
One of my favorite things about law school is the amount of free food floating around. When clubs have meetings they usually offer some type of food. Most times it’s pizza. However, sometimes clubs get fancy and have some really good stuff. For example, last week, one club had a taco buffet catered by some restaurant. All I have to do to get a free lunch is go the meeting. Not only do I save some money, I often get to hear some interesting guest speakers.
Even if I can’t make it to the meeting, there’s this table at our school designated for the leftover food. From this table I can usually come away with lunch and dinner without spending a dime.
I know. I sound like a bum. But if someone is going to offer free food, you would be stupid to turn it down. No shame!
Frugal Lesson: Attend club meetings. Not only can you learn some cool stuff, you get free food.

Written by The Frugal Law Student
Top Law Student will be publishing a series of posts on different Web 2.0 sites that can help law students. I love Web 2.0 because a) they’re really handy tools and b)they’re usually free, which helps me mitigate my crippling debt. Stay tuned to Top Law Student!
Use Your College Facilities
Written by The Frugal Law Student
Over at Blueprint for Financial Prosperity, there’s a post on using facilities at your college to save money. All the suggestions are great. I think it’s amazing how little students take advantage of some of the things their universities provide. Instead of checking out books from the library, they buy their books from Borders. Not frugal.
Save Money by Living with the in-laws
Written by The Frugal Law Student
Part of my plan to mitigate my law school debt is living with my in-laws. For many, this would be the equivalent of stabbing yourself in the eye repeatedly with a hot ice pick. For me, the experience has been surprisingly wonderful.
My in-laws are great people. They’re fun and super nice. Because they live in two story home, they gave the upstairs to us. There’s so many extra rooms up there, that my wife and I each have our own office to do work. Pretty nice.
Here’s a list of the perks of living with the in-laws.
- No rent. We’re saving about $500 a month
- No utilities. That’s probably saving us about $200
- Free cable and Internet. Savings: $75
- Free laundry.
- Big family dinners once a week.
- The in-laws take us out to eat every once in awhile.
- I can talk football with father-in-law
- My wife has someone to talk to when I’m gone all day at law school
It’s not like my in-laws aren’t getting anything out of this deal either. In return, my wife and I have taken on the chores my in-laws did not like to do. I mow the yard, rake the leaves, and take the recyclables to the recycling center. Mrs. FLS vacuums the house, makes dinner every once in a while, and does the dishes. Mother in law even said she’s going to miss us when we move out. We just might have to spend another year here.
Free Music
Written by The Frugal Law Student
When I was in high school and had a disposable income, I was a music freak. I had no qualms about buying a few CD’s a month, just so I could hear new bands. My high school days were also when Napster was at its peak.
But then something happend.
I lost interest in music.
A contributing factor was my brother lost all my CD’s while I was out of the country for an extended period. The one thing I was looking forward to coming home was my cd collection. But it’s gone.
The other factor is I don’t have money to spend on CD’s or go to shows. So, I’ve been out of the loop.
Well, no longer thanks to Pandora.com I love this site! You can start a radio station based on any song or band you like. Currently, I have Nerf Herder, The Rentals, Cake and Juanes on my stations. As the songs play, you can tell the system whether you like that song or not. The system will use that info to fine tune your selection even more to your tastes.
And the best part? It’s free! You just have see an ad on your screen and listen to an occasional one during your music stream. It beats any Clear Channel radio station.
